Hello friends,
I just want to ask you if what jobs are available for the blind in your country.
I know in the U.S there are a lot, but what are other fields are available other than computers? Also, I want to know if what ways can a person will go there?
Because here, specifically in the Philippines, there are really a few jobs that are available. And for those persons with disability, visually impaired is not their priority. Thanks if you answer this post.
Hellow. I live in England and a few of the things that blind people have done are as you say computer stuff, remedial therapy jobs and piano tuning.
Hi, I have a college degree in Sociology. I work for my local HOusing Agency as a sort of assistant for our Housing advocate. I have a lot of contact via phone with different clients who need units. I also do a little case management and go on home visits with our housing advocate. I have also worked as a volunteer Crisis Line Hotline Advocate for victims of Domestic violence and sexual assualt and as an office assistant during college in our school's department for students with disabilities. I like my job so far. I'm in AmeriCorps which is like the domestic Peace Corps. (I do get a paycheck)!! I'm sure I'll learning more duties as I get more acquainted with the program. I've only had this job for about 2 months. For any job-seekers out there, pick an interest, and try to find ways of how you can work that into a career.
I agree. In the case of jobs whose sole purpose is to pay the bills, like part-time jobs you have when you're in college, the opportunities for people with disabilities are more limited, which is a right bitch. But as for a career to which you wish to commit several years and that is reasonable for someone with a disability to do, then fight like hell to make it happen for you.
As for suggestions for part-time, bill-paying jobs here in the US, there's customer service and computer work, restaurant work, vending, medical transcription, court reporting, and foreign language interpreting. Some of these require a bit of training, and some may not, depending on your knowledge.
I think I understand it that you'd like to move here? I won't say it'll be easy, because getting citizenship here can be a pain in the ass. But if you really want to make it happen, don't give up.
Namaste,
Becky
